Alice Morey
Born in 1986, Alice Morey is a Berlin and London-based interdisciplinary artist, with an MA from Chelsea College of Art, London and a BA in painting from the University of Brighton. She is represented by Lehmann + Silva in Porto. She is the founder and curator of an alternative collaborative art residency, Countdown Grabowsee (Globe Gallery), organised every summer in an abandoned sanatorium north of Berlin. Morey often works collaboratively and is part of three active collectives: Portland (UK), TEETH (UK/DE) and Puppetmaster (DE).
Some recent solo exhibitions include She Doesn't Love, She Just Devours, The Ryder, London (2019), Dirty Laundry curated by Sonja Teszler, Wells Projects, London (2019) and a site-specific collaborative project When the Stage Turns Dark Tomorrow at LA54, Berlin (2019). During the corona lockdown in spring 2020, Morey took part in an online group exhibition This Must Be a Place curated by Sofia Lemos with Lehmann + Silva and later this year she will have a screen print edition 42 Days released with collective Et al Press in Berlin. In 2019 she was the Family Artist-in-Residence at the Camden Arts Centre, before completing a residency with the Academy of Visual Arts in Hong Kong. She has also developed a series of works at the Art Academy in VAADS in Tbilisi, Georgia.
“Morey is interested in the passage of time. She finds beauty in decay and contrasts it with pain. She has been juxtaposing natural and artificial materials for years in order to explore the concept of change. Her performative work could be compared to rituals, as she undertakes actions charged with symbolism in a ceremonial tone. She acts either as an alchemist or a contemporary witch who manipulates natural processes.
